This is an independent, non-profit newsroom run by women who were originally at the Texas Tribune. They tell the news from the perspective of women and they explore the connection between gender, politics and policy. https://19thnews.org
The purpose is beautifully described as follows: "Today, women make up more than half of the American electorate and are more engaged than ever in our politics — marching on state capitols, voting at higher rates than men, and running for local office and seeking the presidency in record numbers. Yet they remain underrepresented in government and in the nation’s executive ranks. Women and LGBTQ+ people are also underrepresented in politics and policy journalism and in newsroom leadership, which influences what stories are told, how the news is covered and whose voices are elevated."
The 19th is dedicated to covering the news and reporting the stories in a manner that puts all women and LGBTQ+ people as the main characters. The utilmate goal of The 19th is to increase participation by underrepresented communities in democracy.
I am excited about this news outlet because it is nonpartisan and isn't full of opinion pieces. My hope is that this news provider becomes so popular it drowns out the noise from entertainment outlets that disguise themselves as real news. Seems like the vast options for news providers are just offering opinions that strive to divide the American people into two camps. News used to just be the facts - not opinions to create one side against another. The Texas Tribune is an award winning, nonpartisan news outlet and The 19th is just as remarkable, from the perspective of women. Both outlets are based in Austin!
